The Republican ticket of the incumbent president of the United States Ronald Reagan and the vice president of the United States George H. W. Bush defeated the Democratic ticket of the former vice president Walter Mondale and the U.S. representative from New York's 9th congressional district Geraldine Ferraro. Reagan defeated Mondale in the national election with 525 electoral votes.
