Roosevelt and the speaker of the United States House of Representatives John Nance Garner defeated the Republican ticket of the incumbent president of the United States Herbert Hoover and the vice president of the United States Charles Curtis. Roosevelt defeated Hoover in the national election with 472 electoral votes.
