The Democratic ticket of the incumbent president of the United States Lyndon B. Johnson and the senior U.S. senator from Minnesota Hubert Humphrey defeated the Republican ticket of the junior U.S. senator from Arizona Barry Goldwater and the U.S. representative from New York's 40th congressional district William E. Miller. Johnson defeated Goldwater in the national election with 486 electoral votes.
