Dewey and the governor of Ohio John W. Bricker defeated the Democratic ticket of the incumbent president of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt and the junior U.S. senator from Missouri Harry S. Truman. Roosevelt defeated Dewey in the national election with 432 electoral votes.
