Eisenhower and the junior U.S. senator from California Richard Nixon defeated the Democratic ticket of the governor of Illinois Adlai Stevenson II and the junior U.S. senator from Alabama John Sparkman. Eisenhower defeated Stevenson in the national election with 442 electoral votes.
