The Hindu is an Indian English-language daily newspaper owned by The Hindu Group, headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It was founded as a weekly publication in 1878 by the Triplicane Six, becoming a daily in 1889. It is one of the Indian newspapers of record. As of March 2018, The Hindu is published from 21 locations across 11 states of India.

The Hindu has been a family-owned newspaper since 1905, when it was purchased by S. Kasturi Ranga Iyengar from the original founders. It is now jointly owned by Iyengar's descendants (locally referred to as "The Hindu Family"), who serve as the directors of the holding company.

Except for a period of around two years, when S. Varadarajan held editorship of the newspaper, senior editorial positions of the paper have always been held by members of the original Iyengar family or by those appointed by them under their direction. In June 2023, Nirmala Lakshman ( a great granddaughter of Iyengar ) was appointed Chairperson of the Board of THG by rotation, for a period of three years. She was earlier Joint Editor of The Hindu and edited the Sunday Magazine for over three decades. Lakshman launched the Literally Review in November 1991 - then the only newspaper literary supplement in India. She also founded Young World , a children’s weekly newspaper in 1990 and The Hindu’s ‘Lit for Life’ literary festival in 2011. She is the author of The Tamils ( Aleph, 2025) , Degree Coffee by the Yard ( Aleph, 2013 ) a short biography of Chennai, and compiled an anthology of journalism called Writing a Nation ( Rupa Publishers, 2007).

Her sister , Malini Parthasarathy , was THG’s chairperson during the 2020- 2023 period and their cousin, N Ram, the chairperson before Parthasarathy.

K Venugopal was appointed Chairperson of Kasturi & Sons Ltd., the family's holding company, in September 2023 for a period of three years.
