This is a list of earthquakes in 2003. Only earthquakes of magnitude 6 or above are included, unless they result in significant damage and/or casualties. All dates are listed according to UTC time. The maximum intensities are based on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale. Earthquake magnitudes are based on data from the United States Geological Survey. The year 2004 had the most major earthquakes since 1999. In total, there were 16 magnitude 7.0+ earthquakes this year, including six in Indonesia. The vast majority of the earthquake-related deaths in 2004 were caused by the magnitude 9.1–9.3 earthquake off the west coast of Sumatra in December, more specifically a devastating tsunami triggered by the earthquake that impacted coastlines across the Indian Ocean. There were several other deadly and destructive earthquakes, including in other areas of Indonesia, Morocco, Japan, Iran, Pakistan and Turkey.
