Axel Honneth (/ˈhɒnɛt/; German: [ˈaksl̩ ˈhɔnɛt]; born 18 July 1949) is a German philosopher working in the tradition of critical theory, who is the Professor for Social Philosophy at Goethe University Frankfurt and the Jack B. Weinstein Professor of the Humanities in the department of philosophy at Columbia University. He directed the University of Frankfurt Institute for Social Research (Institut für Sozialforschung) between 2001 and 2018.
