The Eighth Orissa Legislative Assembly was convened after 1980 Orissa Legislative Assembly election. Following Indian National Congress (I) win in 1980 election, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi dismissed 7 non congress led state govt including Odisha, imposed President's rule and called snap election of these state. Post election, Indian National Congress (I) led by Janaki Ballabh Patnaik came to power after winning in landslide 118 seats.
