The Sixth Orissa Legislative Assembly was convened after the 1974 Orissa Legislative Assembly election. A large-scale defection from the ruling Congress (R) Party led to the fall of the government, leading to the imposition of President's Rule and the calling of a snap election. Subsequently, Congress (R) under the leadership of Nandini Satpathy returned to power.
