Xinwen Lianbo (simplified Chinese: 新闻联播; traditional Chinese: 新聞聯播; pinyin: Xīnwén Liánbō; lit. 'News Simulcast') is the flagship daily national news television programme for state television broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV), aired live on CCTV-1 and CCTV-13 daily at 7:00 PM. By custom, it is also simulcast on the flagship channel of each provincial satellite TV station in mainland China, making it one of the world's most-watched programmes. It has been broadcast since 1 January 1978.
This program is used as a medium for the state to make official government announcements and meetings, commentaries on major economic and policy issues, and the activities of national leaders. The program reflects official positions of the Chinese Communist Party on a wide range of matters.
In Chinese political communication research, the program is often described as an authoritative nightly bulletin in the Party-state media system, as it relays major political news and policy priorities in a highly standardized format. A large-scale content analysis of its 2003–2013 scripts treats it as one of China’s most important platforms for political communication and argues that tracking its coverage can help identify changes in state policy emphasis over time.
