"Why This Kolaveri Di" (transl. Why This Murderous Rage, Girl?) is a song from Anirudh Ravichander’s soundtrack for the 2012 movie 3. Written and sung by Dhanush, the track marked Ravichander’s debut in the Indian music industry.
Released on 16 November 2011, the song quickly became popular on social media due to its quirky “Tanglish" lyrics. Soon, it became the most searched YouTube video in India at the time and an internet phenomenon across Asia. Within a few weeks, YouTube honoured the video with a '"Recently Most Popular" gold medal award and "Trending" silver medal award for receiving many views in a short time. Following the song’s huge success and nationwide popularity, Dhanush, the singer, was invited by then-Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh as a "Guest of Honour".
