United States territory is the area under the sovereign jurisdiction of the federal government of the United States, including all of its land and territorial waters near the mainland and islands. The United States asserts sovereign rights for exploring, exploiting, conserving, and managing a 200-nautical-mile (370 km; 230 mi) exclusive economic zone in neighboring ocean waters.
