As of 1 October 2019, the city had an estimated population of 57,872 in 24,872 households, and a population density of 1,035 persons per km2. The total area of the city is 55.90 square kilometres (21.58 sq mi). The city is notable as one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan.
