Tahrir Square (Egyptian Arabic: ميدان التحرير, romanized: Meydān et-Taḥrīr, Egyptian Arabic pronunciation: [meˈdæːn ettæħˈɾiːɾ]; English: "Liberation Square"), also known as Martyr Square, is a public town square in downtown Cairo, Cairo, Egypt. It was first established in 1867. The square has been the location and focus for political demonstrations. The 1919 Egyptian revolution, and the 2011 Egyptian revolution occurred partially at the Tahrir Square.
