The first nationwide student strike erupted across the United States in May 1970, initially in response to the US expansion of the Vietnam War into neighboring Cambodia. The strike began on May 1 with walk-outs from university, college, and high school classrooms on nearly 900 campuses across the United States. It increased dramatically following the shooting of students at Kent State University in Ohio by National Guardsmen on May 4. While a number of violent incidents occurred during the protests, for the most part, they were peaceful.
