Statue of José I of Portugal

The equestrian statue of King José I is located in Praça do Comércio, in the city of Lisbon, Portugal, and is the work of sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro. It is a remarkable sculptural work: it is the first equestrian statue made in Portugal, and also the first public sculptural monument in the country dedicated to a living person. Furthermore, it was the first statue of its dimensions to be cast in a single pour in Portugal, and one of the first in the world to do so.
