Resident Evil is an upcoming American horror film directed by Zach Cregger, who co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten. It stars Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, and Kali Reis, and is produced by Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions in association with Constantin Film and Vertigo Entertainment. Based on the video game series by Capcom, the film is the second reboot and eighth overall installment in the Resident Evil film series.
Plans for another Resident Evil reboot began in early 2022 following the critical and commercial failure of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) and the cancellation of the 2022 Netflix television series. The series' future had been in discussion since former Constantin chairman, Martin Moszkowicz, revealed the producers had plans for future installments and a new television series. By 2023, several outlets reported a grant of CA$2 million from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation for the production of a film titled Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, while Cregger was eyed by Sony in mid-2024. Pre-production officially began in January 2025, with Constantin co-producing a new film alongside PlayStation, while Cregger would direct and co-write the script with Shay Hatten. Four studios, including Warner Bros. Pictures and Netflix, bid for distribution rights, with Columbia Pictures winning in March that same year. Filming began in October 2025 in Prague.
Resident Evil is scheduled to be released on September 18, 2026, by Sony Pictures Releasing.
