Restricted free agent

A restricted free agent (RFA) is a type of free agent in some sports leagues, such as the National Football League (NFL), National Hockey League (NHL), and National Basketball Association (NBA). Such players have special restrictions on the terms under which they can retain or change employment status with their athletic club teams.

RFA status is often tied to receiving a qualifying offer (i.e., an offer for a new contract with a certain minimum salary) from their most recent team. Qualifying offers are also used in Major League Baseball, but do not restrict free agency; extending such an offer merely ensures that the team will get a compensatory draft pick if the player signs with another team.
