Military settlement
Military settlements (Russian: Военные поселения) were a special organization of the Russian military forces in 1810–1857, which allowed the combination of military service and agricultural employment. This organization turned out to be a failure, with the exception of the area of Caucasus Mountains, where the settlers played their role in defense against the incursions of belligerent local peoples, and after the insurgency was sufficiently suppressed, the settlers joined the local Cossack hosts.
