Malhar Rao Holkar (16 March 1693 – 20 May 1766) was a noble subedar of the Maratha Empire and the first Maharaja of Indore from 1732 until his death in 1766. He was one of the early officers along with Ranoji Scindia, appointed by Peshwa Bajirao I to help spread the Maratha rule to northern states and was given the estate of Indore to rule by the King chief, during the reign of the Maratha Emperor Shahu I. He was founder of the Holkar dynasty that ruled Malwa.
