Mahabad (Persian: مهاباد) is a city in the Central District of Mahabad County, West Azerbaijan province, Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district. Due to its historic significance to Kurdish nationalism, Mahabad is seen as the capital of Iranian Kurdistan by the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization.
