The Electoral Commission of South Africa, sometimes simply referred to as the Electoral Commission, or referred to as its previous name, the Independent Electoral Commission or IEC, is South Africa's election management body, an independent organisation established under chapter nine of the Constitution.
The Commission is responsible for conducting mandatory elections to the National Assembly, provincial legislatures and municipal councils.
The Commission was established on 17 October 1996 to replace an original interim Commission that oversaw SA's first democratic elections in 1994. It is headquartered in Centurion, Gauteng.
