The General Colonization Law was a law enacted by the Congress of the Union on 18 August 1824. Its purpose was to attract foreigners in order to increase the population, transform the country, and improve the economy. To achieve this objective, it was considered necessary to support the immigration of foreigners by granting them certain benefits, such as ownership of land to cultivate, as well as personal security and protection of their property. The law was part of a series of proposals presented between 1821 and 1824 aimed at improving Mexico’s overall situation.
