Sir Francis Beaufort KCB FRS FRGS FRAS MRIA (/ˈbfərt/ BOH-fərt; 27 May 1774 – 17 December 1857) was an Irish hydrographer and naval officer who created the Beaufort cipher and the Beaufort scale.
