The surname "Prevost" (originally "Prévost") is from an Italian/French cognate of the title "provost", originally from the Latin praepositus '[one] placed in charge'. Leo XIV's paternal grandfather originally bore the Italian surname "Riggitano", but he took the name Prevost and gave it to his sons. It was also the family name of the pope's French great-grandmother.
