Dasaratha Jataka

Dasaratha Jataka (Pali: Dasaratha Jātaka) is a Jataka tale found in Buddhist literature about a previous life of the Gautama Buddha. It is found as 461th Jataka story in Khuddaka Nikaya of Sutta Pitaka in the Pali Canon.

It is based on the ancient Indian epic Ramayana and other adaptations of it such as the Thai Ramakien, Lao Phra Lak Phra Ram and Burmese Yama Zatdaw are claimed to derive from this Jataka.

Scholars generally consider the Ramayana to predate the Dasaratha Jataka, although debate continues over how the two traditions may have influenced each other. Buddhist and Hindu sources often emphasize the primacy of their respective canonical texts, but modern scholarship typically regards the Jataka version as a later Buddhist adaptation of themes also found in the Ramayana. Some commentators argue that the Jataka’s narrative serves as a simplified or didactic retelling rather than a direct parallel to Valmiki’s epic.
