College Hill is a neighborhood in the City of St. Louis, Missouri. The name "College Hill" derives from its former use as the College Farm of Saint Louis University. The area, generally bounded by Warne Avenue, O'Fallon Park, I-70, Grand Boulevard, and West Florissant Avenue, was acquired by the University for garden and recreational purposes in 1836. It was subdivided in the early 1870s.
Notable structures in the neighborhood include the Bissell Mansion, the Grand Avenue Water Tower at 20th Street and East Grand Avenue, and the Red Water Tower at Bissell Street and Blair Avenue. Much of the neighborhood’s housing stock dates from between 1880 and 1920. Townhouses and four-family flats are common, along with a number of single-family brick dwellings. Many houses have comparatively large yards, and properties near the crest of the hillside bluff overlook the river and its surrounding valleys. Nearly half of the residential units are owner-occupied. Historically, commercial activity has been concentrated along East Grand Avenue near the Old Water Tower, with an additional corridor along West Florissant Avenue.
