Christian fascism is a religious and political philosophy that blends Christianity with fascism, endorsing violence, authoritarianism and the regeneration of society on the basis of the Bible and its teachings. Historical examples of Christian fascist movements include the Iron Guard in Romania, active in the interwar period and World War II and whose ideology incorporated elements of the Orthodox Church's doctrine; the Blueshirts movement active in the Irish Free State during the 1930s and of Catholic inspiration; and factions of Ulster Protestant paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland.
The term Christofascism is a neologism which liberation theologian Dorothee Sölle coined in 1970 to designate one strand of Christian fascism prominent in the United States.
