Cellularization

In evolutionary biology, the term cellularization (also spelled cellularisation) has been used in theories to explain the evolution of cells from non-cellular components, for instance in the pre-cell theory, dealing with the evolution of the first cells on Earth, and in the syncytial theory, which attempts to explain the origins of multicellular Metazoa from simpler unicellular organisms.

Processes of cell development in multinucleate cells (known as syncytia) of animals and plants are also termed cellularization, often called syncytium cellularization.
