Cannabis in Virginia

Cannabis in Virginia is legal for medical use and recreational use. Virginia initially decriminalized simple marijuana possession effective July 2020, and the first medical dispensary opened in August 2020. Recreational use was legalized effective July 2021, allowing adults to possess 1 ounce (28 g), cultivate four plants per household, and share cannabis where there is no commercial transaction.

While Virginia became the first state in the southern United States to legalize cannabis, as of March 2026 retail sales remain limited to medical patients.
