Cabuya, Costa Rica
Cabuya is a small fishing village on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica.
Situated just 7km south of Montezuma, and across the Cabo Blanco Reserve from the well-known beach towns of Mal Pais and Santa Teresa, Cabuya is considered a quieter alternative to these more developed destinations. The village attracts hikers, mountain bikers, surfers and water sports enthusiasts, while still offering a sense of traditional Costa Rican life.
The entrance to Cabo Blanco Reserva, Costa Rica's first nature reserve, is located in Cabuya. The reserve's rich biodiversity and extensive trail system draw nature enthusiasts year round. Near the village is a Yoga retreat.
Just offshore lies Isla de Cabuya, also known as Cemetery Island. Accessible by foot at low tide, the island has been used as a burial site since and pre-Columbian times and remains in use today. The reef that surrounds the island is popular for fishing and snorkeling.
In addition to its natural and cultural attractions, Cabuya is home to small family-owned businesses, local sodas (restaurants), and retreat centers, including yoga and wellness programs. The community has maintained a low-key atmosphere compared to nearby tourist hubs, making it appealing to travelers and long-term residents looking for a more authentic and tranquil environment.
