Böszörmény

Böszörmény, Izmaelita, Hysmaelita ("Ishmaelites") or Szerecsen ("Saracens"), were names used to refer to the Muslims who lived in medieval Hungary. They constituted a significant part of the population from the foundation of the state at end of the 9th century until the Mongol invasions at the end of the 13th century

Over time, this community was joined by groups of Muslim settlers. They were primarily engaged in trading and finance, but some were employed as mercenaries by the kings of Hungary. Their rights were gradually restricted from the establishment of the Christian Kingdom of Hungary in the 11th century. Nonetheless, they maintained a significant presence into the 13th century, but gradually diminished by the end of the 13th century after King Charles I mandated all his subjects to become Christian.
