The city of Atlanta, in the U.S. state of Georgia, successfully bid to host the 1996 Summer Olympics, its first and only serious attempt at doing so. Initially seen as an underdog against the other candidate cities, particularly Athens, Atlanta was awarded the hosting rights on September 18, 1990, by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
