Ivan Stambolić (5 November 1936 - 25 August 2000) was a Serbian politician. In his career he rose to become the president of the Presidency of the Socialist Republic of Serbia during the 1980s. In August 2000 he was assassinated just before a national, pivotal election, the event itself and reasoning for which is extremely important in understanding some of the events that occurred after the Yugoslav Wars.
