The 1962 United States Senate special election in Massachusetts was held on November 6, 1962. The election was won by Ted Kennedy, the youngest brother of then-President John F. Kennedy defeated George C. Lodge, the son of the older Kennedy's predecessor Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. The younger Kennedy would remain Senator in the next forty-seven years until his death in 2009.
As of 2026, Kennedy and Lodge's combined age of 65 remains the youngest for two major candidates in a United States Senate election. With professor H. Stuart Hughes, the grandson of Charles Evans Hughes, running a serious independent campaign, this election also featured three of America's most prominent political families.
