The earthquake measured 7.0 on the moment magnitude scale and had a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent). There is debate among seismologists on whether or not the earthquake was caused by movement on the Hosgri Fault and its mechanism of faulting. There were no injuries or deaths from the earthquake.
