The compound is notable for its synthesis by carboxylation of adamantane. 1-Adamantanecarboxylic acid is unusual in forming mononuclear tris(carboxylate) coordination complexes of the formula [M(O2CR)3] (M = Mn, Ni, Co, Zn).
